FAQ 223
I'm looking to study law at the University of Sheffield, but I would also like to study a year abroad. When selecting my choices do I select law with international studies or do I choose just law and then will get the option to study abroad after the first year whilst at university?

All of our law courses offer a year abroad, either as an option or compulsory. The programmes with a compulsory year abroad are the Law with French/German/Spanish/Chinese Law courses and Law (International and European).

A benefit of choosing the International and European course is that you will get first choice of destinations, because the year abroad is compulsory. We make sure these students are allocated their destinations first then, after this is complete, the spaces and destinations left are opened up to students on other programmes. There is less choice of destinations available after compulsory year students are allocated, but if you're flexible then there's still great places to visit.

For courses offering the year abroad optionally, you should be aware that currently you need to achieve a 2:1 in your first year results to be given permission to take a year abroad.

It really does depend how committed you feel at this stage to go for the compulsory route, having an optional year might offer you more flexibility later on if you decide at that point it's just not for you. We do provide a huge amount of support to students studying overseas so that can offer reassurance. Our students really benefit from it and it does positively impact their CV and employability.
