Choosing a law conversion course depends very much on what your end goal is.
Both the GDL and MA Law will provide you with the same level qualifying law degree as the LLB (Hons) Law. If you want to practise as a solicitor or barrister then we tend to recommend the GDL first as it's the most popular route to qualifying. The course is intensive as it effectively condenses a three year law degree in to just one year. For that reason it's geared more directly towards people who are sure they want to practise law.
The MA Law also provides a qualifying law degree but the course is less intensive, as it runs over 2 years (full time) or 3 years (part-time). The duration allows for a more manageable pace in which you'll cover topics with greater depth and breadth. Students also choose this path in order to enhance their CV and either go on to pursue careers in business or the public sector, or go on to take a PhD in law and become academic lawyers.
In terms of funding, the GDL doesn't qualify for the Government Postgraduate Masters Loan because it is a diploma. There is less funding available for the GDL, we don't offer anything through the School. The MA Law does qualify for the Postgraduate Masters loan and there is more funding available. We don't offer any funding directly from the Law School, but the University offers postgraduate scholarships which may help.
If you can, do come along to our next CPLE Open Day. The teaching team are there and a careers expert who can answer any questions and tell you more about the course and life after study.
